Montreal Canadiens v Boston Bruins

Who:

Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins

Records:

Boston Bruins: 21-7-3 (last 10: 6-4-0), 2nd in East, 45 points (31 games)

Montreal Canadiens: 20-6-5 (last 10: 7-2-1), 4th in East, 45 points (32 games)

Justification:

I’m a little tired of including the Habs in these, but hey, IT’S THE BATTLE FOR FIRST IN THE NORTHEAST, catch the fever.

Head-to-head:

Both teams have beat the other by a goal, in their opponent’s barn. This is their third matchup, with a four set for early April.

Puck drop: 7:30 p.m. EST

Need to know:

* Winner gets first in the Northeast OMG. While Boston gets the visual #2-seed, they’ve yet to have more points than the Montreal Canadiens at any point of the 2013 season, which is kind of crazy. Read the rest of this entry »

Montreal Canadiens: 20-6-5 (last 10: 7-2-1), 2nd in East, 45 points

Justification:

One vs. two seed equals a short justification sentence.

Head-to-head:

The first and only time they’ve played so far was the start of the Penguins current run. Pitt won that game one touchdown to two field goals. …Seriously.

Puck drop: 7:00 p.m. EST

Need to know:

* You likely already know, but the Penguins have won 12 straight games. Read the rest of this entry »

Who:

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks

Los Angeles Kings: 17-12-2 (last 10: 5-5-0), 6th in West, 36 points

Chicago Blackhawks: 24-3-3 (last 10: 7-3-0), 1st in West, 51 points

Justification:

I figure “NHL’s best team so far versus defending Cup champions” doesn’t need much ‘splainin’, Lucy.

Head-to-head:

Blackhawks have beat Los Angeles 5-2 and 3-2 this season – this is the last time they’ll face each other.

Puck drop: 8:00 p.m. EST

Need to know:

* The Los Angeles Kings’ talented offense is playing like a bunch of dusters that past few games. They’ve lost two straight, and they haven’t scored since March 19th, covering a span of 126 minutes and 14 seconds. Read the rest of this entry »

Anaheim Ducks v Detroit Red Wings

Anaheim Ducks: 22-3-4 (last 10: 7-0-3), 2nd in West, 48 points

Justification:

It is a bleak, bleak night of NHL games. Flames and Blue Jackets – catch the fever!

Head-to-head:

Ducks won 5-2 in their only previous meeting. They’ve got each other back-to-back coming up.

Puck drop: 10:00 p.m. EST

Need to know:

* They’ve earned points in 12 straight, and are 15-1-3 in their last 19, which for the uninformed, is decent. Read the rest of this entry »

New York Islanders: 13-13-3 (last 10: 5-3-2), 10th in East, 29 points

Justification:

The Isles may be in 10th, but they’re only three points behind three teams who sit in 9th, 8th, and 7th. Two of those teams happen to be the Devils and Rangers. Also, I’m an Islanders fan. OH, one other thing: see below:

Head-to-head:

The Islanders have beat the Habs both times they’ve played this year. They can complete the sweep at home tonight.

Puck drop: 7:00 p.m. EST

Need to know:

* While the Islanders are in their own battles of sort, the Canadiens are only three points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for first in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto Maple Leafs: 15-12-2 (last 10: 4-4-2), T6th in East, 32 points

Justification:

I’m writing up something else on the Blackhawks/Ducks later today, so I thought I’d keep the site diverse. And hey, it’s the wildly popular Leafs vs. Stamkos and crew. Fun!

Head-to-head:

The Lightning won their only other battle 4-2 in Tampa. After tonight, they’ll have one game left against each other.

Puck drop: 7:00 p.m. EST

Need to know:

* Steven Stamkos is once again comfortably in the lead for the Rocket Richard trophy, having scored 21 goals on the year so far (he just hit 200 for his career, fourth youngest ever to get there behind Gretzky, Lemieux and Hawerchuk). Read the rest of this entry »

Who:

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins: 22-8-0 (last 10: 9-1-0), 1st in East, 44 points

Justification:

It may not be your typical “Game of the Night” as far as standings go, what with the Capitals not holding up their end of the bargain this season, but these two teams have a history, and people care about them.

Head-to-head:

The Penguins have won both their previous 2013 matchups – this is the last time they’ll face each other this season.

Puck drop: 7:30 p.m. EST

Need to know:

* The Pittsburgh Penguins are riding the NHL’s current longest winning streak, having so far put together nine straight. And hey, the Washington Capitals have managed to string together one straight, so y’know, coupla big streaks on the line here. Read the rest of this entry »
