With the Raptors mired in another losing streak and sitting 11 games under .500, now a nearly insurmountable 6.5 games out a playoff spot, much of the talk among fans and observers is about what the Raptors have to do to improve, specifically in the short term.

Much of the talk is about what moves have to be made. But if you ask me, the real concern for a team at a delicate stage of a rebuilding process should be more about what moves have to be avoided.

Five Alive!

A 9-19 record only looks good when the team starts 4-19. What appeared to be a lost season with no draft pick has very quickly turned into something worthwhile. Hope doesn’t come from the fact that Toronto sits five games out of the eighth seed in the East. Hope comes from the style of basketball we’ve seen over the last six games.

In their best defensive effort of the season (perhaps the victory in Indiana was better), the Toronto Raptors put the clamps on the Dallas Mavericks for a 95-74 victory. A day after Andrea Bargnani said the Raptors were “the worst team in the NBA,” Toronto came out looking like an inspired group. Perhaps that was a result of Bargnani’s comments, or perhaps it was a result of Bargnani’s absence from the lineup…
