Ep. 524: World Record

On today’s show, Skeets and Tas set a world record while arguing over whether the Tony Parker-less Spurs are dead. (Long live the Spurs!) Can Manu Ginobili carry the scoring load? Is it Matt Bonner, “Western Conference Player of the Month” time? Or were the Spurs already SOL against the elite teams anyway? All that, plus The Jones’ spin on some Guinness World Records.

  1. Thanks guys.

  2. New digs are great, but the Flash player SUCKS. It spins its dials for about 10 seconds and then gives up the ghost. I’m forced to go through iTunes. It takes a while to download, but at least I can get my Jones.

  3. I am setting a world record as the second post on the world record snuggle podcast on the score by a cavs fan livingin DC. Never take that away from me!

  4. Spurs fan here, I totally agree with Skeets! I’ve been saying all year that we have played better without Parker, and Hill is capable of leading this team through a very tough March stretch. I don’t think the Finals are going to be seeing the Spurs anytime soon, but if these guys can get consistent (like RMJ and Bonner), WCF at best!

  5. It is nice to see you guys are the same-old with The Score, but I think your daily episodes are getting shorter… They use to be around 20 minutes not around 13.

  6. …and yes Skeets, sorry, the Spurs are done.

  7. I love it, Tas. The city of Utah.

  8. How about James Posey as the quintessential journeyman of the NBA?

  9. Like they said, they’re workin out the kinks, things will be normal in no time. I myself am hoping for the Jazz to go on a bit of a slide, because a 4-5 Suns-Spurs first round series would be a great possible final chapter in that rivalry. But yes, even if Manu doesn’t play THAT great, him and Duncan both playing well should be enough to get the Spurs into the playoffs. And I don’t think we’ll have a Orlando Magic/Jameer Nelson/Finals escapade with Pop.

  10. Per earlier comment on linux with either chrome or firefox browser the video just doesn’t seem to work.

  11. For all the linux users, The Score’s intelligent developer team has a fix for you.

It seems that our video provider’s player does not work with the 64-bit flash player. The work around is to download the 32-bit player from Adobe and then create an ns-plugin wrapper for it. If you follow the instructions in the first link below you should be ok. Also below is a link to a newer version of flash that you can download. The developers recommend using that plug-in instead of the one that the blog post (the first link) links to.

  12. @John

Did you read this post in the comments of yesterday’s episode?

  13. Big Spurs fan, but I’m with Tas. They have the same problems they had since 07-08: not enough frontcourt help for Timmy. McDyess, Bonner and Blair each have their strengths, but none of them are strong help defenders. Also, the big three are older and the surrounding cast is a lot worse than it looks like on paper, possibly worse than last year despite the “big movse” over the summer. Mason and Bonner are shooting the 3 MUCH worse this year. Did you guys see Mason against the Cavs? He just missed wide open three after wide open three. Richard Jefferson is basically a role player without a specific role (and a sub-par role at that) who’s shooting badly and playing bad defense. Bogans does absolutely nothing. McDyess is doing close to nothing.

We can’t take for granted the Spurs will make the playoffs this year, but if they do, I’d be surprised if they win two games.

  14. No way Jones. Most traveled player without a doubt is Juwan Howard !!!

  15. longest running relationship? bandwagon fans and the lakers/magic johnson/jordan/bulls/shaq/orlando/jordan bulls/lakers shaq/lakers kobe “shifting loyalty” issue?

(depending on if you’re a kobe lover and lebron hater, replace the last one with “Lebron/Cavs” instead of “lakers/kobe”)

  16. No reference to “The Pooh God”?! Did that have to be retired with the move?

  17. TO FUNNY:
LeBron James Suspended from NBA for Secret Ties with Al-Qaeda!? http://bit.ly/ayuISz

  18. Big Greek community in the city of Utah, Tassos: http://www.pahh.org/hca/history.html

  19. stream stops half-way. do you still hosting on vimeo or youtube?

  20. The Spurs are done if Manu doesn’t put up very above average numbers each night, like Skeets said. They’ll easily get bumped, perhaps, down to the tenth spot if he doesn’t. Maybe, though, Pop decides to change things up a bit line-up wise and they can sneak into the 7th or 8th spot. I’d really like to see DeJuan play some more minutes. They need to start switching things up this summer and maybe that starts with Manu. They lack young talent and should start the generational transition really soon. Memphis looks, now, like the team that will get that 8th spot and, with a few trades, they could become a regular in the West playoffs.

I think Dallas may have peaked too early to get second place in the West. Denver, in the end, I think will be more consistent than Dallas down the stretch and will take that 2nd spot.

  21. The Spurs are done. Manu carrying that kind of load doesn’t help their biggest issues: not enough depth and RJ’s lack of performance.

  22. Don Nelson and golden state, thats an unholy union

  23. I miss all the gangsta beats in between the breaks

  24. new world record: most use of the word snuggie by a Canadian blogger EVER!

  25. Be sure Spurs are NOT done! Manu will continue to do all those amazing plays to be valuable as he used to be – proving he is healthy and for sign a great contract next season. with or without Spurs.

  26. Sadly I’ve got to agree with Pasty for the most part. Tas, you’re right, I hate to throw my team under the bus, but if the Spurs can hang on to the 8th spot, I wouldn’t expect a long playoff ride. Manu put up about as good of a game as he has in him, and it still wasn’t enough to beat a Cavs team that had no LeBron and no Jamison for the majority of the 2nd half. Mason lost his dagger shot, now can’t hit a damn thing. RJ went from looking like the best offseason move to one of the worst with his abhorrent play this year. Tim and Manu can only do so much. I think Hill is a great player and can be a legit PG in a few years, but with a tough schedule down the stretch, it just won’t be enough.

  27. Spurs need George Hill to be Tony Parker. As great as George is and coming into his own there is in fact only one Tony Parker. The only way I see the Spurs getting even past the first round is if they have a first round date with the Jazz. Right now The Lakers, Mavericks and Nuggets are all way too good and seem to be for gone conclusions to advance deeper(Though being a big Mavs fan I am aware of their choking abilities) The Spurs are playoff bound however is Parker isn’t back when the Playoffs roll around The Spurs will be One and Done.

  28. I will not only agree with Mr. Melas, I will go further. I think the Spurs will make the playoffs, but even if Tony Parker comes back in time they still won’t make it out of the first round. I say this with Timmy D. being my one of my favorite current NBA players, but I do think his days of true dominance are behind him. I can only wish him the best of luck.

  29. The Spurs were the team of the last decade (cop it Lakers fans) but it’s time to rebuild. Missing the playoffs wouldn’t be such a bad thing… it would force the issue.

  30. My vote for best NBA relationship is JE Skeets and Tas Melas!

Please, please, please don’t forget that audio iTunes feed!

    Great work, guys.

  31. Was I seeing things or did Jennings just tell KG what time it was?

  32. For the guy from Brazil you know Manu is from Argentina right? Soccer rivals to the death Brazil and Argentina?

  33. Team win against the Spurs proves how far the Cavs have come since that horrible finals a few years back.

  34. The Rockets are just delightful. Are they are the best team in basketball in the sense that no one truly plays as a team and uses each others talents to make a go of it like the Rockets? Also what a trade Kevin Martin for McGrady, something for nothing.

  35. the spurs are done-diggity-done. they’re a first round exit waiting to happen. the defense sucks, and theres no magic bullet for that.

    /spurs fan

  36. Wow…Tas…you pretty much hexed Dunleavy…if I were him I would be coming after you with a black cat, broken mirror and a ladder.

  37. Hey Tas, Skeets…

You are the GM of the New Orleans Hornets…

    It is July 1st, 2010.

    You need another good-great player.

Who do you trade? Collison or Paul?

Collison is at his absolute trade peak, but is showing more potential, really, than almost any other rookie.

Paul is, well, Paul… a potential future HOFer, the arguably best PG in the page…

    What do you do?

I expect to hear your answer…

    Shelb
    Toronto

  38. Wait, Manu is able to score 30 per game, Skeets? Uh, I politely disagree.

Spurs finish 8th in the West, get swept by the Lakers.

Holy hell, Tas, you just fired Dunleavy.

This flash player isn’t great in Safari, either. Working okay, but I had to refresh and reset twice. Reset? Whatever.

Ah, sorry about the Blazers not covering for you, Tas. Camby saved the day for Portland.

Good show, but a little short. Where’s my 22 minutes of TBJ?!?

  39. I miss the beats/songs too. Nice setup tho, and again congratz on hookin’ up with the Score

  40. Hey…

I just talken to Nate Robinson. Weird how Twitter can lead to action people talking.

Super nice guy. I think you guy shoiuld talk about how well he;s fit intil the Celtics bench?

But moreso his LOST obsession is better (Mike Finley is a season ahead of him too).

Its almost to the point Nate scores for Jacob.

    4815 Boy!

  41. #wordaapp

  42. I just watched the episode and was momentarily confused by Melas’s Dunleavy comment. Then I remembered…he wasn’t fired yet at the time of the taping. Quite creepy.

I think the Spurs could beat the Jazz if they wind up matched against each other and without K-Mart, the Nuggets might be vulnerable to Duncan and the Spurs bigs.

  43. Thanks for the info re: flash… haven’t tried it and I will, BUT my computer is 32 bit (yes I know… it’s 32 bit is so 20th century…but so am I)

  44. For anyone wondering why the show is shorter, it’s because there are no more “music interludes.” I’d say that adds up to about 1-2 minutes of break time that they now don’t have. Also, usually shows were 15 minutes tops so the ~ 13 min number makes sense. The audio shows used to be 20+ minutes, good memories :(

Still, gotta sacrifice some quantity for the higher quality. And hey, for all the audio podcast day ppls, they are getting us a weekly audio show!!! OMGZ

  45. Melas,

great call on Dunleavy on yesterday’s show. Just as you say the drama will never end, it ends. Mercifully, we can all stop listening to Simmons complain about Dunleavy.

  46. Hey Skeets, it’s actually, “None Shall Pass.”
