On today’s show, Skeets and Tas stick and move. Is D-Wade’s O, Jermaine’s D and The Tito Jacksons enough to handle the Magic in a possible first-round series? Is Steve Nash the greatest shooter of all-time, as per John Hollinger’s CSR formula? And which ESPN personality is our Wanker of the Week? All that, plus new specs.

I can’t imagine I’m the only one suffering the follow problems:
- Video will not load
and
-Video plays between 10-20 seconds and freezes, then repeats first problem.
Help!
Yeah I’m experiencing problems with the video as well!
I also experience those problems! I’ll let the video load for a while then when I try to play it, it won’t play
No problem on our end Shelb.
But we’re looking into it….
Skip Bayless not only deserves ‘Wanker of the Week’ but also ‘Malakas of the Month’.
Seems to be working now, thanks JD.
Hollinger’s system, this time, actually sounds pretty basic and straight-forward. Best shooting percentage, overall, all time. Yeah, I’m not surprised it’s Nash. Dude takes great shots, not easy shots, and he’s deadly. When he’s pulling from the top of the key in the fourth, you know it’s going.
Now that you guys don’t work for Yahoo!, can Woj please please be a Wanker of the Week one day??
As long as Larry Legend, Ray, and Reggie are in the conversation I think it’s fine. If I was drunk right now, I would definitely add Thunder Dan into the mix because I feel like I never saw him miss a three pointer during my childhood.
Skip Bayless sucks.
Please stop saying the Heat might be able to win four games against the Celtics.
The guys on Hollinger’s list were all good, the problem is that Hollinger goes with stats all the time, no arguments no questions. Had he said “Larry got doubled and tripled more times in his career than anyone else on this list combined, so maybe his stats were alittle lesser than the rest” I’d have no problem with Legend’s rank being so low. IMO, Him and Nash share the number one spot, if not Nash being a hair behind Larry.
Are we still getting the audio show today or is that a no go until next week?
EVERYONE is saying the Celtics are the weakest team in the top four.
And I quote Rudy Tomjanovich :”Never underestimate the heart of a Champion”
Round two will have some great games.
PS. Great shirt Tas.
Great work guys. I enjoy the new moving background. Who does the song you featured after the headlines today? Is it the same band from yesterdays show? the “love is gonna take you away song”?
Fun Skip Bayless fact:
For you TBJ/Top Chef fans, Skip’s brother is world-renowned chef Rick Bayless. Don’t know how one could be so douchey while the other is so cool.
Skeets: “I’m 5-4, you’re 4-5.”
I caught that slip! But i don’t mind. Great show guys.
For the people with Caching issues – Click play then pause and then ignore it for 10 minutes. Then click play again it will run smooth to the end.
I don’t take too much stock in Hollinger’s statistical analysis, you can create and manipulate statistics to get the results you want…67% of all people know that 92% of the time.
Shelb — The Jones’ 45-minute audio-only podcast will likely start next Friday afternoon.
Oh man, that is going to be the best day of the year so far, hands down.
Excellent, thanks Skeets. Looking forward to that.
I’m probably an asshole for not being an Insider and not reading Hollingers article and seeing his reasoning and methodology but why not just use True Shooting %? It’s not like it’s hard to calculate or unavailable information and we know it’s a better metric.
It seems like this method basically just gives a lot of unnecessary weight to free throw shooting. Which, while nice, is a fairly easy shot.
A guy who shoot 40% from three, 50% from the field, and 90% from the free throw line is great. But is he a better shooter than a guy who shoots 50% from three, 50% from the field and 80% from the line? Hollinger’s silly little stat has them as equal, while I definitely know who I prefer for my team and consider the better shooter.
On second thought, Hollinger kind of captured a neat psychological phenomena: His list captures who who you feel like misses the least (relative to the number of total shots taken). Granted, if the rating were weighted based on how many of each kind of shot each player actually takes (without weighting for difference in point value) that would be an even better measure and one that might be interesting. Who plays most perfectly and misses less relative to everyone else in the league?
Or you know, whatever. Nerds.
Interesting that the show featured Melo and Jermaine — two guys with tons of talent who could be doing more. Don’t get me wrong, I know Melo is still a huge star and Jermaine has had a lot of injuries — but — it’s not like they are giving crazy effort on all parts of their game during the entire game.
Just my opinion . . .
of course . . . they aren’t the only two guys in the L who have the ‘goods’ to be much better but don’t put in the effort. (biggest example would probably have been Shaq . . . a more modern example would be Boozer and Amare on defense — both are so strong and efficient on offense, but couldn’t guard John Hollinger in the paint)
Tas doesn’t even what time games start. Ugh. And why does Skeet Skeets always look away in his pics? O mang, ESPN Insider? What a waste…
@Travis: haha
@Raptorman: folk wisdoms are overrated
JBT — I’m shifty and can’t be trusted. In fact, I just stole your wallet.
I agree about the Heat being a cinderella team and O’Neil being the X factor. I get the impression that more and more centers are tanking the regular season to get through the playoffs, particularly suspect, the Celtics. I think Garnett and Sheed will come out to play a different game come post season. The old, “we don’t want people paying attention to us all year!” trick. The librarian with the glasses comment struck home seeing that I’m now a librarian who wears glasses! Thanks guys!
Dorrell Wright has been playing with a little more confidence as of late. But hes been doing alot of nothing in Miami for years. I love him out of a sense of loyalty to any player in a Heat uniform, but how hes managed to stay with D.Wades Heat for so many years is beyond me. I try not to question Riles often though..
OK, I am not a huge fan of the Hollinger CSR, and I don’t know what the True Shooting % is, but how about this to measure the shooter’s greatness?
(2P total points / 2P total attempts) + (3P total points / 3P total attempts) + (FT total points / FT total attempts)
This way a higher 3P% is weighted more heavily, and rightly so, since it is theoretically a harder shot. Yeah I know, there are plenty of shots in the paint that are harder to sink than a wide open 3, but if you’re going to measure shooting greatness, why not look at the total # of points the player gets for each time he shoots the ball?
I think Riley has his plan in place and is happy just to make the post season. Something tells me Wade will find himself with a lot of help next season. The Heat need a bench and that might be half the staring lineup next season. There might be some Pistons in Miami next season as well as some Raptors. One thing Riley will do is teach talent old school D. Lot of talented offense oriented players that haven’t been to a Sloan, Popovich or Riley school of defense. The east will look a lot different next season.
starting, not staring…the staring is just my own tired eyes
the basketball jones is the best
Wow…Dana Barros was actually pretty, pretty good at shooting the ball.
heat getting no credit?
cavaliers have the best record and been playing great yet u still dont give the time a day on ur show
Your feed won’t work for videos in any software other than iTunes. Can we get some zune love over here? The old feed no longer works.
Re Nash: what needs to be taken into account is how you defend a guy. Nash is such an amazing passer (especially off a pick’n'roll) that you actually play him for the shot a bit more. Reggie Miller was a better shooter, but lacked the passing ability that would make the defender take a step back.
Also, can we have an entire show with the Heat Dancers’ photos and/or videos only? Pretty please?
Take every other player out of the equation and bring it to Bird and Nash….
Nash wins, it is insane for a guard to shoot over 50% from the field, especially with the number of 3s Nash takes.
He is an exceptionally proficient 3 point shooter, I love the guy in my fantasy leagues because he brings you high fg%, high 3 pt%, and High ft% year in and year out.
Shooting over 50% from the field over 40% from 3, and over 90% from the line, I think he is unparalleled as a shooter. And he is met with many more athletic defenders in today’s league than bird ever did.
Bird probably a better scorer, but better shooter? I don’t think so.
Who’s the better shooter? Kobe or Mark Price? Mark Price, duh! But Kobe is the better scorer, I think we run into the issue of people thinking this rating from Hollinger labels Nash as a better scorer than Bird which simply isn’t so, but it really shows who is the most efficient shooter.
Nash at #1 is okay in my book. You guys almost touched on exactly what makes him so special. Kerr and a lot of those guys were fed easy shots, but Nash is the primary creator for everyone else on the team. Nobody else on that list is also in the top 10 for assists all-time.
