Ep. 589: Game 4 Recap

On today’s show, Skeets and Tas breakdown Game 4 of the NBA Finals. How gutsy was it for Doc Rivers to keep Big Baby, Nate Robinson and co. in so late? If Andrew Bynum isn’t healthy enough play key minutes, are the Lakers screwed again? And what did Tony Allen do in order to, um, “contain” a hot Kobe Bryant? All that, plus technical fouls, Odom’s love life, half decent officiating, World Cup fever and much, much more.

(Reminder: Don’t forget to make your TBJ Book-Off picks.)

  1. Softball? What a fag. Are we talking about Rodney Carneys fam bam? I’m Ron Burgundy? Whoa-boy ftw! Alexander the Great gets his ass beat by Atilla the Hun in “The Deadliest Warrior” so shut the front door.

  2. You should say “leotarded”, Skeets.

  3. Tas, good for you for sticking up for Chloe. I heard about the Boston crowd chanting “ugly sister” or something during one of the games. I saw the LO/CK wedding on TV, and it was beautiful. Why would anyone denigrate a love so pure?

As for the ball, so far this is the best finals series I’ve seen in a long time. Really enjoyed how close the game stayed yesterday. And while the C’s might have outworked the Lakers a bit, I think it also bears emphasizing how composed the Lakers stayed. They gave up too many points and starting getting beat on the glass, but they stayed pretty aggressive on offense, I thought, and didn’t get taken out of their game. They scored 27 in the 4th, the problem is they gave up over 30. I was really hoping it would go to overtime; didn’t want the game to end.

  4. Can’t agree more with Tas regarding Bynum’s knee. Why do we know so much? It should’ve been kept under wraps. Now everyone is on “Knee Watch 2010″, and it’s no bueno for The Lakers. Here’s hoping all players on both teams can play to the fullest of their abilities. And for god’s sake, LESS DROOL.

    Lakers in 7.

  5. Still a bad 3-second call, even if it was technically correct: http://nbaplaybook.com/2010/06/11/about-that-phantom-three-second-call/

  6. This has been great series but the C’s barely pulled that one out i mean cmon guys if bynum plays solid minutes they lose(not that the C’s didn’t earn it). The biggest reason for the crappy offense on both sides is that they keep missing open shots. I’m not talking about a bad open three by artest or tony allen(that was horrible). Kobe, fish, ray allen, garnett, pierce (though he was on last night). cmon garnett that 18 foot jumper from straight away shouldn’t even touch rim. but all in all its been good and game 5 is still a must win for Boston no way they win two games back to back in LA.

  7. Great stuff guys! Thank you Tas for giving the Celtics their due…they took this game. This is the second Celtics win in a row where it got framed as the Celtics being lucky, and the Lakers losing the game more than the Celtics winning the game. It is not true. The Celtics couln’t have beaten Cleveland and Orlando and provided this kind of competition to the defending champs through luck. They have the talent, depth, length, and experience to win a championship. It amazes me that people still doubt that.
Although I don’t agree with this, It can also be argued that the Lakers were lucky winning their two games because the Celtics didn’t play perfect basketball in those games. If two or three of Ray’s shots go in during game 3, they win that game.
I think it’s a fallacy to regard the Celtics as an overwhelming underdog in this series. I don’t think the talent level is that much titled in favor of the Lakers. From what I can tell, they have two great players, and a bunch of other role players who can be great but have a record of being inconsistent. Who can they count on to provide consistent points when Gasol or Kobe is off. It could be argue that the Celtics have more talent. They have an all-star point guard, one of the best shooters ever, three seven foot big-men, a stellar bench, a Kobe stopper in T. Allen….
The Lakers were heavey favorites in ’08, too, and it was largely because the Celtics were framed as being “too old”.
So thank you, Tas, for giving them their due.

  8. Tas, i feel connected to you. I am wearing exactly the same shirt right now :-)

  9. I wish this show were 5 hours long today. I don’t think I’d ever get sick of hearing people discuss that game.

What a battle this has been. Game 5 is going to be so huge. If the Cs can go back to LA up 3-2, I feel great. If they’re down 3-2, I feel not so great. Either way, I think this thing is going the distance.

Agree completely on Bynum’s knee. Garnett’s knee was a fucking mystery last year. Every week, you’d wonder when he was back. Then he was probably back in the playoffs. Then he was out for round 1. Turns out afterward that he was never fucking coming back!

I feel like organizations all handle these injury situations differently. The Celtics (like their football counterparts, the Patriots) are always tight-lipped about injuries, and don’t give the media anything concrete in terms of information. Maybe the Lakers are more in to the disclosure (and, I guess at the end of the day feeding the media machine is what you should be doing to keep the league on people’s minds).

  10. Glad to hear some props for Sheed! Rivers should get some credit as well! 7 game series for sure!

  11. Wankers of the week – you guys, for forgetting wanker of the week.

  12. @ andrew: i know u said that you didn’t agree with it but i’m glad you brought up the point because i’ve heard this from many celtics fans already this notion of a perfect game. give me a break are they really expecting this perfect game to come up during the series? it’s not as if the lakers are playing at maximum potential every game and yet the games are still close. all that talk is just a bunch of what ifs, i could do the same thing: if ron wasn’t shooting like shit, if lamar would show up, if kobe shot a higher %, if the bench was more productive, if ‘drew weren’t hurt, if the lakers played defence for 48 minutes, if the lakers played perfectly they would crush the celtics, and so on …

  13. that’s a lot of ifs illmatic
