NOTE: A day after this post was written, trade talks between Toronto and Charlotte fell apart and it is now believed that Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw will remain in Charlotte while Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans will remain in Toronto. The deal sending Hedo Turkoglu to Phoenix in exchange for Leandro Barbosa is still considered likely to be completed.

A source has told The Score that the Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Bobcats are in the process of finalizing a deal that will send point guard Jose Calderon and expiring contracts to the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for Boris Diaw and Tyson Chandler. Sources could not confirm that the trade call has been made to the league as final details are still being worked out. Sources say the expiring contract of Reggie Evans is believed to be going to Charlotte with Calderon.

Staying true to his word about evolving rather than rebuilding in the wake of Chris Bosh’s departure, Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo has gotten the ball rolling. From Arizona, Paul Coro reported that the Raptors and Suns agreed to a trade that would send forward Hedo Turkoglu to Phoenix in exchange for guard Leandro Barbosa and, most likely, forward/center Dwayne Jones.

At the end of a disappointing season in which the Raptors did not make the playoffs and point guards Jarrett Jack and Jose Calderon struggled to find their rhythm as a tandem, moving one was a priority. The agreed-upon trade would send Calderon to Charlotte, helping the Raptors to accomplish this goal while also freeing themselves of a very unattractive, hefty contract in the deal that sends Turkoglu to Phoenix.

Colangelo has revamped the roster since losing franchise big man Bosh, who headed to South Beach to play with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. Assuming the trade goes through, in the past week Colangelo has locked up Amir Johnson, gotten rid of disgruntled Turkoglu, cleared the logjam at point guard and nabbed two potential starters in Diaw and Chandler.

As more information becomes available, this post will be updated.

UPDATE: Tyson Chandler has confirmed to Y! Sports that he has been traded to the Toronto Raptors according to the Twitter account of Marc Spears. There you go, guys. Will fill in the rest of the blanks as info becomes available.

  1. Expiring contracts, or the Bosh trade exception?

  2. The 3 way deal could be:
Jose + Hedo + Banks or Evans
for Diaw + Chandler + Barbosa

Banks and Evans both have 5 Mil contracts that expire after this season. This trade works under the cap, I think, no TPE needed.

  3. Amin: As far as we know right now, the Bosh trade exception is not included in the deal.

  4. My relationship with Colangelo just changed from hate/love to love/hate. This could be a fun team to watch.

  5. So we WERE warm. Hell, we were on fire.

    Thanks Scott, Holly.

  6. Goodbye TurkoLoser

  7. So was that Multiple Sources, Unnamed Source, Various Sources or Inside Source?

  8. Unbelivable. How did BC just move our two most unmovable contracts. Unbelivable.
Rather have Evans gone than Banks. Banks is good for short minutes for intensity

  9. And when i just start thinking that B.Colangelo is in helpless situation….. BC, u r the man

  10. If Turkoglu joins Nash in Phoenix, we should rename the Suns TPJ (The Phoenix Jones).

  11. Lets not forget that in NBA there are also connections and influences. And I believe Brian Colangelo has both

  12. vs: Nice callback. Holly will have to clarify which kind of sources. All I know is that she stayed up all night trying to track down details about this. She emailed me at 4am ET with the news and she’s been trying to nail this down ever since.

  13. Great move by BC, he got rid of that bum Turkoglu, as for Calerdon, he’s about 29 now, we already know what he’s about-bad defence and selfishness. Give BC an extension, the man knows what to do.

  14. I love these deals. Sad to see Jose go, but I think its necessary. Great to see BC pulling a team together without committing big money in long term deals. If DeRozen and Bargnani can take the next steps in their progression this team could be pretty good. Either way, our young talent will get a chance to play.

  15. This team will have a tough time sharing the ball and creating an easy Baskets. Neither Jack or Barbosa are traditional pass first PGs. This team needs such a player and I hope that BC use the TPE to acquire it.

  16. BC has made this team alot better in the past few days hes gotten rid of Turk and Calderon and added Diaw, Chandler, Kleiza(if Denver doesnt match our offer) and hes also locked up the energetic and young Amir Johnson you cant ask more out of BC he has clearly made the Raptors go to looking from a 30 Win to to 40-45 win team in the span of a week.

  17. Anyone mind explaining how the Bosh trade exception works?

  18. In a trade, you can take back $xxx, xxx dollars more than you send out, for one year after the trade. It can be split into separate deals.

  19. Has Chandler played a full season yet?

  20. Blair: Because of the Bosh S&T, the Miami Heat effectively traded to us their cap room for the value of Bosh’s deal (14.5M) and we have one year now to use that exception.

  21. Just to clarify, exceptions work only for trades, not free agents.

  22. Holly 4 president, nice work breaking the story with Chandler… love ya Holly!

  23. Nice, Thanks Steve and Brian. So we can expect another trade soon if we can’t use it on free agents.

  24. great that he dumped those salaries…but when you have to blow up your roster every year like BC has done your probably not doing a very good job

  25. For the Raptors and Bobcat trade, I like that for both teams, they need a solid point guard and get a good over all player in Evans, who can defend the paint , rebound and yes he can score the ball in the paint…. Then I seen this shit about trading Hedo for Barbosa and almsot shot myself,,, Bosh is not a good pick and roll player, Bargnani needs to learn how ,, think about it…If you let Calderon go and pick up a decent point guard in free agency fine, but Hedo is still going to get to handle the ball more,,, and the pick and roll with Hedo and Chandler or Diaw,, I mean Hedo can get the ball to Chandler like he did Howard…. I like this move the move with the bobcats for both teams,,, I don’t like Hedo for Barbosa.‎4 Hedo and Barbosa ?Please do not make this trade, I realize that there are financila implications in this trade for the raptors but if you trade Jose Calderon in that deal with the bobcats which is a good deal for both teams you’re going to want Hedo,,, Bosh was not a good pick and roll player and Bargnani needs to learn how,,, but Imagine hedo & Tyson chandler,, … Hedo can get that ball to chandler like he could Howard… think about it,,, this is not where we want to go,,, for Hedo, this is not a solid trade for us. Barbosa is a good player, but Hedo brings so much more to the table, hedo played terrible and still averaged 13 points, 5 assist and 5 rebounds. Hedo and Chandler pick and roll!!!! Hedo and Diaw pick and roll, oh did I say Hedo and Chandler pick and roll!!!!

  26. i agree with “raptor4ever” they need another PG. and there is a possibility that the raptors could trade for darren collison. that would be an excellent trade as collison averaged 9.1 assists per game but his very good play has been overshadowed by Chris Paul.

then there is the possibility that olden state is trying to get rid of monta ellis and biedriens. with chandler now a raptor biedriens isnt nessesary but monta ellis could be worth aquiring to give the raps some much needed scoring

    with a starting line-up of:
    C-chandler
    PF-Barganani
    SF-derozan/weems/diaw
    SG- ellis
    PG-collison
the raptors could be a very solid team. chandler is a big body and could rebound as the raptors need, collison would provide the assist that theyre looking for and ellis the points.then with depth of amir, davis, jack, weems, diaw depending on who else they ship out theyll be a good depth team.
oh and im there were other reports saying that reggie evans is not part of the deal but instead the raps will flip new aquisition dewayne jones and send him to charlotte instead of evans

  27. Jose had to go!! he was terrible on defense , he may score a quick 10- 12 points but he give up twice that amount on the other end, At times i would be pulling out my hair watching guys go pass him with such ease, He made average guards look like the second coming of Tim hardaway. Luv the look of this new team , speedy and athletic. report this comment

  28. Wow, I DUMPED on Colangelo in my blog just a couple days ago. I might have been too soon. First he gets rid of Hedo who I thought couldn’t be traded.

Then he takes the second worst contract on his team and trades it for Diaw and Chandler. Chandler is at the very worst a big expiring contract. At his best he is the perfect compliment to Bargnani. Not a Diaw fan really, but he can play some D and while overpaid his contract is a year shorter and a couple million less than Calderon’s.

Epic win so far for BC

  29. They will be fast and athletic , All jay have to do is let these guys go play carefree fast break highflying basketball , and let the SCORE fall where it may with the final buzzer.

Let these guys play to their strenght !! let them run and jump out the gym, We are now full of those ATHLETIC guys. Don’t handcuff them with a halfcourt offense, let them run wild, give the fans something to cheer about at the ACC, and if we can win that way then so be it. at least if we lose lets look pretty doing it.

DON’T SUBJECT FANS TO LOW SCORING HALF COURT OFFENSE LOSSES.

  30. i think B.C just made one of the best moves he has ever made for the raps, because we have got rid of a pg that everyone has been wanting to get rid of with his poor lack of D and mediocre shooting. Also he just got rid of turko who was a major let down for the raps. In return we would get a nice solid centre to help Bargnani play pf and we can then move barbosa to play as pg and diaw to play small forward while weems/derozan play sg. I like the sound of the raps team right now. Look at the way weems/derozan/davis/jonson in the summer league, there showing there potential to be a very well balanced team and that everyone should pay attention to what the raps will do this season.

  31. although itd probably end up horrible for the raptors id love to see allen iverson sign with the raps as hes been my altime favorite PG. hed be a half cheap and short contract. hed be looking to prove that he can still play and toronto needs scoring so theres an oppurtunity for him to prove he still got the scoring touch he had when he won the scoring title in philly. who knows maybe he could return to playing like he used to.

  32. All I ask for is a hard working, exciting team. Would I love to see the playoffs, or another division championship, a conference championship or dare I say an NBA championship? Hell yeah I would! But for now I can deal with finally getting to see a young team of scrappers where every game should be exciting to watch!

  33. Love this team. Complete transition team with Jack, Weems, DeMar, Amir, Chandler, Bargs, Belinelli, Barbosa, and even Davis and Diaw are all very mobile for their positions. ANd whats that, two post players in Chandler/Amir that play defense and rebound. Excitement rising. See if BC can grab a back-up PG with the TPE, like Ridnour to distribute to those finishers around him!

  34. This all makes a ton of sense. Raptors needed defense, they got it now….they needed to shed dollars….they got it now…they kept some good players(barg, jack, derozan)…they got it….

But is all this for nothing? the same thing could be on all the other 14 eastern conference teams
thinking how can we stack up against powerhouses like Orlando, Miami, Boston Atlanta and Chicago..
I think it is they best Bryan can do with what he has in his hands, and has done an amazing job as a GM

Who would like to see Colangelo get Andre Igoudala with that Trade Player Exception? how about
    Collison and Igoudala?? Rip Hamilton?

  35. This is a GREAT trade for Charlotte. Chandler was dead weight on that team last year (injuries and whatnot) and Diaw was basically taking minutes away from Tyrus Thomas. With Felton gone, they really needed a point guard — DJ Augustin sucked last year — and Calderon is great scorer and distributor. His defense isn’t a huge issue, because he’ll have guys that can compensate for him (Captain Jack, Wallace, TT), and Charlotte desperately needed some offense.

  36. I think Igoudala or Hamilton would be bad fits. Why take on the bloated contract of Igoudala when you are rebuilding?

The Raps need to suck for awhile so they can build some assets. That is the only way for a small market team to succeed (see: OKC and POR).

There is no veteran they could realistically get that will make them have a shot at the upper echelon so why bother? Why get good enough to be a 7th-10th seed? That is the worst place to be as an NBA team. Too good to get a high pick and too bad to ever contend. BC needs to make some moves to address lack of back up point and PF glut..that is it. Hopefully he does it with short term salaries.

Raptors suck for 2 or three years and in that time Chandler and Diaw contracts are gone, they have a couple high lottery picks to add to the young guys who hopefully develop: Bargs, Johnson, Davis, Weems and Derozan. If you have a number 1 or 2 pick in there (or two) maybe you have an exciting young team that could convince a veteran to come in free agency.

  37. I really think we need a player that can score the ball when the game is on the line, a true 20ppg scorer and raptors clearly doesnt have that as yet..i think GILBERT ARENAS would be a great fit, now that Washington has John Wall i dont think they will be able to play as good together….if we have starting (Jack, Arenas, Weems, Bargnani and Chandler) starting that can be a real deep line up, then ull have a solid bench… Raptors need a leader that teams fear…GO GET GIRLERT ARENAS IT WILL BE WORTH IT

  38. Hedo and Diaw pick and roll, oh did I say Hedo and Chandler pick and roll!!!!

  39. I’m done with the Toronto Raptors if they trade Hedo for Barbosa knowing they are getting Chandler and Diaw this would be terrible. Hedo didn’t play well with Bosh cause bosh’s pick and roll sux.. but a 7’2 Chandler an excellent pick and roller with a 6’10″ Hedo…that is a nightmare for teams to guard… he can get the ball to Chandler like Howard, except Chandler has a lot more reach and height.

  40. Hedo has gotten bigger and strongewr every year in the NBA and he’s in his prime,,, it’s simple, you don’t sign a 10 year vet and then try and change the way he plays… think of Chandler and Hedo playing together, remind of Hedo and howard mmm yes… Bosh pick and roll sux…. Hedo is a great player and he can do much more thanm what he did… memeber that game he dunked at will and scored at well, that could be every game if you give him the bal,.

  41. Why would you want Hedo and his laziness/bad attitude in a locker room full of young guys? Why would you want his contract on the team?
Is Hedo the piece that will make the Raptors a contender?

No he isn’t – you should be thrilled we got rid of that contract. He isn’t going to get better. He is old and with his habits he is probably breaking down. He has had one outstanding season in his whole career and it was the perfect system for him.

  42. so you just discount all my points. you give him one year where he plays bad still averages 12 points 5 assist 5 rebounds a game with players that didn’t want to give him the ball… than you bring in two bigs that can would love to play with Hedo and send hedo packin. fuck that, hedo and chandler are a great tandum ,, you’ couldsee tyson chandler re envigorated as well as diaw.

  43. I love the Barbosa addition, pure shooter with a sweet shot. I truly believe the Raptors are a better team without Bosh, he was never a go to guy when the game was on the line, his over 20 million that we saved rather than paying a cry baby can go somewhere else much more fitting, I still believe and have faith in BC……
HEAT will NOT win the championship this year….they will score tons of points like Phoenix did, but will have lots scored against! Phoenix never won a championship and either will Miami, Lebron and Bosh will choke when it matters most……

  44. Add up the total number of games Tyson Chandler has played in the past three seasons.
Owch!! Huge injury liability there. I can’t believe nobody mentioned this. And for Hedo, he’s a good player, but not a great player, and he was being paid WAY too much to fit into a system designed for Bosh, not him. Good luck Hedo, don’t let the door hit you in the way out.
Anyone else think Kleiza for $5 million a season is a spectacular waste of money?
Jarrett Jack gets $4 million per year and is a much better, although much different type of player.

  45. Candyman you really only made one point, pick and roll, pick and roll pick and roll…They got rid of a player who didn’t want to be here with his horrible contract, a point gaurd who can’t run an up tempo team or guard anyone and his horrible contract. What we got back was solid role players and defenders and cap flexibility. All in all fantastic trades.

  46. For the record: Tyson Chandler

    (According to nba.com)

    07-08 season- 79 of 82 games
    08-09 season- 45 of 82 games
    09-10 season- 51 of 82 games

You do the math. Who needs a player who’s around about half the time?
We need a Centre who will play every game!
    Rasho??!?

  47. PHENOMENAL TRADES.

I’ve been waiting for Calderon to go for a long time, Hedo going too isn’t just icing on the cake, it’s a whole extra cake!! Who doesn’t like 2 cakes!!

This is the best raptors news I’ve heard in a very long time.

The team won’t have a good record, but I can hope that it changes to a more speedy offensive unit taking advantage of all these springy athletes on the roster now (Amir, DeRozan, Jack, now Barbosa, Diaw, Ed Davis).

As some other poster said, post season success would be fantastic, but for now I’d just be happy with an entertaining team. The last few years this team has been a jump-shot happy, lazily disinterested BORE. Hopefully this changes now

@ the poster who said Hedo Turkoglu was in his prime —– LMAO !!!!

Dude is 31 years old, turning 32 during the course of next season, and his best season was 3 years ago. There’s no way he’s in his prime.

Good riddance to that lazy ass complaining bum.

  48. As long as Hedo is gone, I’m happy.

  49. Don’t understate the addition of Leandro Barbosa. He’s about as brittle as a twig, injury-wise, and fails to use his length & quickness to his advantage on defense, but the kid can flat-out ball.

He’s a phenomenal outside shooter, can draw contact at the rim, and finish with either hand. His mid-range game is improving, too. He’s dependable in iso situations (which helps when plays breakdown – without Bosh, I think this will be crucial), and knows how to use screens to get to the rim.

Most importantly, he’s a great kid, and will really help the chemistry on that team.

  50. Rasho is one of my favorite players. i don’t know why he barely played last year, him and bargnani on the floor would be great , plus he sets our defense.

  51. I’m done with the Toronto Raptors if they trade Hedo for Barbosa knowing they are getting Chandler and Diaw this would be terrible. Hedo didn’t play well with Bosh cause bosh’s pick and roll sux.. but a 7′2 Chandler an excellent pick and roller with a 6′10″ Hedo…that is a nightmare for teams to guard… he can get the ball to Chandler like Howard, except Chandler has a lot more reach and height.

  52. 53. Everyone loves BC now. Ahhh, it seemed like only yesterday that everyone wanted a new GM! I wonder if Babcock wants his old job back

  54. I say great move, Toronto. Remember when the Raps were facing elimination in the playoffs two years back, and calderone simply held the ball letting time expire instead of trying to score? god, that was terrible.

  55. I don’t understand the Chandler deal. Isn’t he the guy that got traded so many times the past couple of seasons, tossed around like a hot potato. Imagine, the Hornets picked up that big contract of the underperforming Okafor to rid of Tyson, who was the great alley-up partner of Paul.

So, I don’t realise why some of you peg Chandler as a starter at 5. Strange trade.

  56. i’m getting that deja vu feeling again….Candyman must be getting ready to repeat his posts……again

  57. just trade barangani for David Lee BC

  58. barabonas for hedo that is there worse trade BC

  59. this is a good trade for both team,,, but if they trade Hedo for Barbosa 4 hedo, big mistake, hedo and Boris diaw / tyson Chandler = perfect pick and roll / over all offensive threat… Remind u of Hedo and Howard???? nex u would mention a healthy Tyson Chandler and Hedo… A 6’10 point guard with a 7’2 center with athletic and offensive awerness ability.. gold.. Hedo and Chandler can both re – envigorate their careers. hahahaahaaaaa Marshalle how did you know lola hhhhhhhhhhhh.

  60. TOR is going hard, whereas CLE is playing it soft. The Commish fined Gilbert 100 G’s for his whine and cheese. As for TOR, looks like they could be a lotto team, as I have the Knicks as a darkhorse 8th seed to restore the MIA-NY rivalry (hooray Spike).

  61. Seriously,,, I’m fuckin sick of this ish, Hedo didn’t live up to his commitment, but neither did anybody else except Bosh and it turns out he’s not right for The Toronto Raptors. but Hedo has to play with a team that did not want him to have the ball and with nobody that had the balls to come to him about how he was handleling the situation.fuck everybody, Hedo needs to have the ball, you don’t sign a 10 year vet and try and change the way he plays… fuck almost everybody that has something to say bout this.

I don’t run the team so I guess I just have to see what happens, but if they get rid of Hedo we loose all of our natural play making,, Hedo is a pass first guy, it’s hard to do that when you don’t have the ball.

  62. Jordan re thinking trade with raps,, I think that is a mistake, Calderon gets to the basket at will, shoots the ball from every where very well, is a better defender than given credit for, there’s somethin to be said about team defense to people, he is a good passer with a solid vision and he can run a team. You better get a point guard like that while you can michael, to get another bigman in return is a bonus.

  63. can you post shit other than raptors updates…. i know you like them but they are a terrible, uninteresting team and organization

  64. The deal with Toronto and Charlotte is apparently dead, but the Turkoglu-Barbosa trade is still in the works.
