Theoretically, an NBA blocked shot should lead to a change of possession. We’ve all heard, time and time again, about how Bill Russell would tip blocked shots to himself or teammates in order to start a fast break. That selfless little bit of defensive lore has been held up as the pinnacle of team-first play for years and years.
But sometimes, a time comes when you just have to say, “Whatever, Bill Russell” and block a shot from under the basket all the way to halfcourt. It’s not the 60s anymore, gramps. Times have changed. Ladies can do stuff now and you’re going to learn how to deal with it.
And hey, even if it doesn’t lead to a fast break, forcing a team to throw up a desperation heave from halfcourt is a pretty decent result for a defensive possession. Even Bill Russell can’t be mad at that.
