Had to bring back the ol’ BDL pink slip gag, folks. No choice. Get it on.

In case you hadn’t heard, the Sacramento Kings have fired head coach Paul Westphal, cutting ties after two-plus seasons amid a slow start and an overblown dispute with young, temperamental center DeMarcus Cousins.

Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie made the announcement ahead of the team’s home game against Milwaukee today.

Here’s what “The Dish” had to say in the Kings’ press release (via Sactown Royalty):

“I want to thank Paul for all of his effort on behalf of the Kings. Unfortunately, the overall performance level of the team has not approached what we felt was reasonable to expect. I wish him — and his goatee’d alter-ego, ‘Evil Paul Westphal’ — the best in their future endeavors.”

Assistant coach Keith Smart, let go by the Golden State Warriors after one season this summer, will serve as head coach versus the Bucks. No word yet on whether Smart has facial hair. Stay tuned.

  1. Finally! Now take the Maloofs with you! Hopefully with Smart we can start to have an offensive sets and live up to the potential this team has.

  2. Wow. I do not like Cousins one bit, and to see a coach get canned for this egotistic bitchass is sad for sports.

Cousins always fueded with all his previous coaches and has this “im better than everyone” attitude. This guy should be traded to the bobcats.

No knock on his talent, yes he does have some, but his attitude for a rookie last year stinks. he looked like he had attitude like he’s been in the league for 10 yrs the way he was jawing at his opponents. I hate this guy

  3. @kobez It wasn’t just the Cousins fiasco that led him out the door. He had a 51-120 record as our head coach, and has severely stunted young talents like Tyreke, Jason Thompson and Demarcus Cousins.

DMC was more of ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back’, not the major problem. Under the right coaching, Demarcus will be an All Star. mark my words.

Anyway, it was his time to go. Great guy, but wasn’t doing us any good.

  4. Let’s be honest here. This team with it’s current roster isn’t going to make the playoffs no matter whos coaching them. It was no secret going into the draft that Cousins was known to be immature.

Send him to a team that won’t take any of his s**t like Boston, maybe KG will straighten him out.

  5. I think this is great…….the Kings have an exciting young talented core. Westphal is not the right person to be managing those guys.
