You might not think that it’s a big deal that Jay-Z wore two different Brooklyn Nets hats on stage during this past weekend’s Made In America festival (you are probably right), but you have to remember Jay’s famous line about the Yankees: “I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.” Ergo, this is pretty much Jay’s first attempt at making the rebranded Brooklyn Nets cool, which would be quite the achievement considering they haven’t been cool since making a couple of SLAM magazine covers around the turn of the century and even that was a stretch.
Will it work? Can a team built around a point guard everyone always forgets, the most boring All-Star in the league, a fisherman known for playing so hard he always gets hurt and a comic book nerd actually be cool? I don’t know. You don’t know. Nobody knows. It’s a fascinating question, really. Can one of the NBA’s most legendary jokes of a franchise succeed in the coolest city on the planet (according to No. 1 city pickers, GQ magazine)? We’ll see soon.
For now, I guess we’ll just have to be happy with Jay-Z’s new hats, which appear to be the Don C snakeskin dealies that run for about $400 a pop. In fact, this could be the pinnacle of the Nets’ coolness. They haven’t played any games and therefore haven’t disappointed anyone, they’re a new look team in a fun city, they somehow dodged the Dwight Howard bullet which would bring down their Q-Rating, and one of their co-owners is a famous rapper who is wearing their hat on stage with Pearl Jam. For fans of our generation, it feels weird to say it, but now is a pretty cool time to be a Nets fan.
