Outside of David West and Lance Stephenson, Tuesday night’s Warriors-Pacers fight was a skirmish between a bunch of the nicest guys in the league. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Roy Hibbert going at it isn’t really “Gladiator,” you know?

I mean, Klay Thompson is such a sweetheart that on top of the $35,000 fine the NBA levied against him, his dad (former NBAer Mychal Thompson) is going to take his allowance away. From ESPN Radio, as transcribed by Believe the Hype:

This was the first time that Klay has ever been fined for an on court indiscretion in his NBA career and the consequences will be more noticeable to him than just the $35K fine. The 23-year-old doesn’t have access to his money, all cheques are paid to Mychal and Julie who take care of his accounts for him to make sure Klay’s financial situation is set up for his post NBA career. So, naturally, Papa Thompson’s going to teach Klay a lesson of his own by fining him personally also, however, Klay will find out the old fashioned way.

“He will [find out he's been fined by us] when he sees that cash envelope show up a little short this week,” he said.

A few things here:

  1. Haha to all of this.
  2. Parents still get mad when their kids get in fights, even when they’re adults.
  3. Getting docked allowance probably won’t help Klay’s reputation as a guy who looks like Cory Matthews on “Boy Meets World.”
  4. Klay Thompson’s parents control his bank account?

To that last question, the answer is yup.

So, if Mychal takes care of Klay’s finances, what does his week-by-week financial situation look like?

“Rent is $3K … Walking around money $300 a week…” Mychal explained. “That’s a lot of money to go to the movies and buy pizza…”

But what if Klay wanted to take a girl out on a nice date?

“Go to Langers in Oakland … Go to the grocery store and get a nice [bottle of wine] for $30…”

What about the corkage fee?

“Sit in the car and drink it.”

Seems like Mychal Thompson is a pretty good dad, except for maybe the part where he tells his son to sit in a car drinking a bottle of wine, which is almost definitely illegal. As a former player who’s been around the league for decades, he knows the struggles that young players often have with their money and he’s taking steps to prevent that from happening to his son. Plus, he seems to realize that if he takes Klay’s allowance away when he gets in fights, he can probably trick him in to not trying to fight guys who are 7-foot-2, weigh nearly 300 pounds and have gone through MMA training. This is just a dad looking out for his son and that’s pretty nice.

And, of course, it’s also hilarious because an NBA player is getting his allowance taken away. Let’s not forget that. TBS Very Funny, even if he’s just playing around.

  1. So he just let’s his old man take care of his money? Rich kid that has parents controlling the dough that could never go wrong

  2. I find Mychal Thompson one of the dumbest, most mind-boggingly stupid local on-air personalities in the NBA and I hated him, until I read this piece.

“Sit in the car and drink it.” – Dying…. dying…. dead.

Also, Klay and Steph are lucky. I can’t imagine starting a fight where my opponents included David West and Lance Stephenson. If Lance is willing to throw his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, what is he going to do to some soft rich kid who does look like Cory Matthews?

  3. FYI, he also won’t let his son get any tattoos.

  4. yes yes and more yes

  5. And that’s coming from a dude who changed his legal name from Michael to Mychal just to stand out more when he was about as old as Klay is now…

  6. Take a girl on a “nice date” lol you shouldn’t be spending more than 40$ on a date.

  7. And in turn, Klay says his father is no longer managing his accounts. Business is business.

  8. If he’s trying to teach his son how to manage his money, NOT paying $3k rent per week would be a good start. He’ll be broke by the time he’s 30!!

  9. Let your credibility falter as this Writer states you will amongst NBA players & let those players laugh if they’re that immature to do so because you will be laughing at all of these ex-NBA players who can just keep themselves afloat let alone their posse…….so ignorant of this writer, what is it to you who handles his money & who gave you the right to judge him?!

  10. Isn’t he 23 years old ?

  11. If you guys know about mychal thompson or ever hear him on the radio, you’d know that this is something he would do. The dudes got a screw loose.

  12. Klay Thompson is soft! Like ice cream on a summer day! He plays like he has someone @ home wiping his nose & tucking him in at night. He’s got a pretty stroke on that jumper; but, he doesn’t finish @ the rim! Defenses r starting to play him that way. He starts strong & fades. I will give him props for defense! Dude, grown up & run your life. I was out of the Army @ 24!

  13. I rather have this than any of our players turn out like Allen Iverson. Yes, I respect Iverson, but the dude is broke after he had a hall of fame career. Sad. Klay and his family are being responsible and not letting him throw his money away.

    • @Juan

Little do you know Iverson is not broke at all. His friend him set up a bank account for him which he can not touch until he is 50yrs old. He already has $30+ million in this account and this account accumilates millions a year.

So before you say something, Atleast know what you’re talking about and give a better example next time. Perhaps Antoine Walker?

      • if he cant touch it until he is 50 what the hell is he gonna live off for the next 13+ years? AI is broke. so if someone promise me 100 million dollars when i turn 70, i guess im no longer broke at age 25 stfu

  14. LOL! that was a great article bro

  15. That’s great. Takes a lot of respect and love for Klay to listen and trust his parents. Takes a lot of love for Mr. And Mrs Thompson to teach and show their son how to live and learn responsibly as a professional athlete. The numbers are staggering how these millionaires go broke shortly after their career.
Keep in mind, Klay got into a little trouble with a drug incident in college.
I’m sure when the time is right his parents will step back.
Can’t compare yourself to anyone else. Every family is different. Luckily there’s a lot of love in this house hold.

  16. Man this Drake looking cracker let his parents control his money . What is he a child actor this is crazy

  17. So they manage his account and only allow him $300 a week to walk around with, but they allow him to pay $3000 a month in RENT?? Dude needs some new financial advisors.

    • Granted SF rent is ridiculous… But still no one said he had to live right next to the arena or in downtown…

      • my guess is he is not paying $3000 a month next to the Arena, which is in Oakland. However, he would also be crazy to live near the Arena. That being said, I lived in an outer area of San Francisco (Richmond District) and for a 1 bedroom apartment paid nearly $2000 (and that was 12 years ago). So, rent in SF for a one or two bedroom can easily reach $3000. Rent in a very nice place in Oakland can also be $3000, depending on neighborhood, size of place, etc.

    • At 3000 a month he’s only paying 36000 a year which he just dropped on a single fine and making over 2 mil a year he’s gonna be fine

    • I live in SF and pay 2500 a month for a studio. It is what it is if you want to have your own place here.

  18. That’s Awesome! Maybe more parents ought to do the same. Especially those new to the game.

  19. $3000 a month on rent, I’m sure he could afford to buy a house with all his coin?

  20. Much props to Klay’s parents, protecting their son, even from himself. For some reason many pro athletes end up broke shortly after their playing career ends. I’ll bet money that will not happen to Klay.

  21. Basketball Jones got a shout out on cnn.com about this article… nice job guys!!!

  22. If we can keep our “children” on our insurance plan up to age 26; we should also be able to keep them on our financial radar. I doubt the Thompson kids will resent their parents looking after their future financial security. There are plenty of bloodsucking vultures and gold diggers wanting to get their hands on the money. Smart parent…lots of street smarts. Blessed are the children who honor their mother and father. Klay and Trayce know who is on their side in life!
