Somewhat amazingly, Stephon Marbury is the biggest star in the Chinese Basketball Association, leading the splendidly-named Beijing Ducks to a title while enjoying MVP chants from the crowd. But since he’s not Chinese, Starbury couldn’t actually take home the MVP trophy. Instead, more than a million fans voted to have a life-size bronze statue built for their reigning king.
Now, you might be thinking that this gigantic bronze Marbury looks a lot like Bobby Bonilla, and you are totally right. But believe me when I tell you that this is really Stephon Marbury and they really did build a statue for him, posed in his celebratory stance after winning the Ducks the championship. HOOPchina.com put up a survey to see whether or not this should really be done — kind of a “Are you guys sure you want a Stephon Marbury statue in our country?” sort of thing — and 1.02 million Chinese responded within a week that they thought it was a good idea. The Chinese education system is the best in the world, so we have to trust that this the correct decision.
In related news I just made up that is probably true, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is in talks to join the Liaoning Dinosaurs. The legendary big man told reporters, “If I have to go to China to get my statue, then that’s what I’ll do. I mean, if they’ll give Stephon Marbury one, then I should be good.”
More shots after the jump.
